Physics and Astronomy
This page is up to date 08.01.2024
The physics curriculum broadly covers both classical and quantum physics. Third year students are introduced to current research in condensed matter physics, particle physics and astrophysics.
Undergraduate Programs:
- Physics, single major (Track 100) – B.Sc. (0321)
- Combined Mathematics and Physics program – B.Sc. (0323)
- Combined Physics and Electrical Engineering – B.Sc. (0512.0321)
- Physics and Computer Science, double major - B.Sc. (0321.0368)
- Physics with Geophysics and Planetary Science, double major - B.Sc. (0321.0341)
- Physics and Chemistry, double major - B.Sc. (0321.0351)
- Physics with Extended Complementary Studies in Life Science - B.Sc. (0321.0455)
- Physics with Extended Complementary Studies in Neuroscience – B.Sc. (0321.1521)
- Physics with Extended Complementary Studies in Humanities - B.Sc. (0321.0600)
- Physics with any other Faculty, double major - B.Sc. (0321.XXXX)
Top level students are allowed to undertake research projects during their undergraduate studies. These opportunities are provided primarily through special honors courses and seminars that are taken in addition to the regular curriculum, individual mentoring, research projects, and additional optional activities guided by faculty members in the School of Physics and Astronomy. The undergraduate research project may provide a basis for continued graduate research.
Physics - single major (Track 100) (0321)
The program is structured to give students the basic skills that are necessary for any physicist, as well as a broad overview of the different branches of modern physics. The nominal completion time for this program is three years.
Combined Mathematics and Physics Program (0323)
This program is intended for students who wish to major in both physics and mathematics. An undergraduate degree in this program with adequate grades allows its graduates to enroll for graduate studies in either of the two fields.
Combined Physics and Electrical Engineering (0516)
This program is offered jointly by the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE).
Applicants must meet the acceptance criteria of both departments. The studies last four years and upon graduation, the students obtain one certificate indicating completion of B.Sc. degree in Physics and EE. Students who wish to obtain two separate degrees and certificates (B.Sc. in Physics and B.Sc. in EE) must study an extra 12 credit hours.
Physics and Computer Science – double major (0321.0368)
This program is offered jointly by the School of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Computer Sciences. Candidates must meet the admission requirements of both programs (The acceptance criteria to Computer Science programs are high – see admission requirements to Computer Science).
A special track within this program focuses on the emerging field of quantum computing.
A student with high academic achievements in her/his first year of study, in either the Physics major (0321) program or the Combined Mathematics and Physics (0323) program, is eligible to apply for transfer to the double major program in Physics and Computer Science.
Physics with Geophysics and Planetary Science (0321.0341)
This program is intended for students who are interested in both Physics and in Geosciences. It covers the main requirements of both departments, and as such, involves an increased study load. A B.Sc. degree in this program with adequate grades allows the student to enroll in graduate studies in either of the two departments.
Physics and Chemistry – double major (0321.0351)
This program is for students who wish to obtain a broad education in both Physics and Chemistry. Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the School of Physics. A degree in this program with adequate grades allows its graduates to enroll in graduate studies in either Physics or Chemistry.
Physics with Extended Complementary Studies in Life Science (0321.0455)
This program is offered jointly by the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Faculty of Life Sciences, for students who want to major in both subjects. It covers the main requirements of both departments and, as such, involves an increased study load. An undergraduate degree in this program with adequate grades allows the student to enroll in graduate studies in either of the two fields.
Physics with Extended Complementary Studies in Neuroscience (0321.1521)
This program is intended for students who are interested in the physical aspects of brain science. It gives a strong background in physics as well as the fundamentals of brain science. An undergraduate degree in this program with adequate grades allows the graduates of this program to enroll in graduate studies in either of the two fields.
Physics with Extended Complementary Studies in Humanities (0321.0600)
This program combines the Physics program with classes from the Faculty of Humanities, with the goal of teaching its graduates the fundamentals of Math and Physics that will allow them to work in all branches of Physics, together with the
communicative and rhetoric capabilities that are required in Humanities studies. Graduates of this program may enroll in graduate studies in Physics, but may be required to take additional courses that were not elected as part of their B.Sc. studies.
Physics with any other Faculty – double major (0321.XXXX)
This program offers the option to combine studies in Physics with courses from any other program of another faculty. Candidates must meet the admission requirements of both programs.
