The Department of Geophysics

The Department of Geophysics offers several B.Sc. tracks, all of which share the same introductory courses. The mathematics and physics courses, taught during the first 3 academic terms, are provided by the School of Physics.  The Department of Geophysics at Tel-Aviv University provides the most complete geophysics curriculum in Israel, with courses in solid and fluid continuum mechanics, seismology, atmosphere dynamics, physical oceanography, planetary sciences, remote sensing, hydrology and more. In addition, it offers a wide range of elective courses in environmental studies.

B.Sc. courses are taught in Hebrew and therefore proficiency in the Hebrew language is an admission requirement.

Geosciences (single major) B.Sc. (0341)

The studies focus on the theoretical and applied aspects of the Earth Sciences: applied geophysics and geology, atmospheric sciences and meteorology, as well as courses in planetary and space sciences.

In the first two years, students gain a solid basis in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The following year is devoted to geophysical and atmospheric studies together with some introduction to planetary sciences and elective courses on environmental issues.

Geosciences (single major) B.Sc. with a Cluster in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (0341, track 0447)

A new Bachelor's program in Earth Sciences, starting in October 2025, combines an extended Cluster in Data Science. Students will take introductory courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science, along with advanced courses in Earth Sciences. Additionally, they will study data science and artificial intelligence courses offered by the Department of Statistics at the School of Mathematics. These courses cover statistical principles, machine learning methods, deep learning tools, and AI ethics and regulation. The program culminates in a data science workshop showcasing AI methods for analyzing Earth Sciences data.

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geosciences in the Research Program for outstanding students (0341, track 0120)

The program is open for outstanding students who aim at a research career in geosciences. The students carry out research projects under supervision by senior faculty members.

Dual-degree program in Mechanical Engineering and Geosciences with an Emphasis on Environmental Studies (0542.0341)

This is a full program in both Mechanical Engineering and Geosciences with additional environmental courses of the Porter School of Environmental Studies. Candidates must meet the admission requirements of both majors.

Geosciences – double major – together with an additional major in any other department from any Faculty (as double major) – B.Sc. (0341.xxxx)

The program offers the option of combining Geosciences with any additional program in any other Faculty (as dm). Candidates must meet the admission requirements of both majors.
